Understanding the Ego

Understanding the Ego: Is It Really “Bad” and Can We Live in Harmony with It?

Many people label the ego as “bad” and believe that having an ego is problematic. Consequently, I once shared this view and even judged others based on it. However, my perspective shifted when I realised that everyone has an ego and moreover, we can choose how to engage with it. Understanding and embracing the ego has been a key part of my healing journey. So, what exactly is the ego? Is it truly “bad,” and can we coexist harmoniously with it?

What is the Ego?

There are three primary components of the ego: the id, the ego, and the superego. In simple terms:

  • Id: Instinctive and impulsive.
  • Superego: Concerned with social norms and morality.
  • Ego: Acts as a mediator between the id and superego.

With this in mind, if you’re hungry, the id might impulsively take food, the superego would judge you harshly for it, and the ego would seek a balanced solution to satisfy your hunger ethically.

Understanding the Ego: Why the Ego is Essential

The ego plays a crucial role in our survival. It connects us to our physical existence. However, societal influences and personal beliefs often paint the ego as an adversary. When we seek answers outside ourselves and blame external factors for our problems, it’s often the superego—the unresourceful part of the ego—that dictates our views of right and wrong. This perspective creates a sense of separation and contributes to our suffering.

Can We Live in Harmony with the Ego?

Absolutely! The key is to turn inward. Harmonising with the ego involves nurturing it with love and kindness. Basically, we address the pain and unmet needs that the ego reflects. Treat yourself with compassion, self-praise, and love. Recognise that triggers are opportunities for the ego to reveal where more love is needed.

As Sadhguru wisely said, “If you go outward, it is an endless journey. If you turn inward, it is just one moment.”
